Re: 400w MH Ballast/Bulbs/Reflectors
Great prices IJO.....
Just my 2 cents worth, I run a single 400 over a 48" tank and it's works great...i have SPS throughout the whole tank. The 400 watt 6500 K is 12" above the water in the center, adn then 3 VHO atinics below. My favorite set-up so far.
The only thing two reef keepers will agree on, is what the third reef keeper is doing wrong!

Re: 400w MH Ballast/Bulbs/Reflectors
Thanks mouse.... is the 6500k an iwasaki bulb?
So far everyone I've talked to about MH say this is the bulb to go with.
I got myself the dule 400w 'eye' setup with 6500k iwasakis and matching reflectors... I can't wait to see how they light up. Each of of these guys will be over a 40 gallon frag tank(24x24x16).

P.S. we now have 4 cents

Re: 400w MH Ballast/Bulbs/Reflectors
Yes my 400 is an IWASAKI....it's a very green light but with the atinics (you can even use NO atinics) it has a nice colour. *My SPS's are growing like crazy since I went with this bulb. *My montipora's have almost doubled their size in 3 months, and the blue tip staghorn is growing more tips each month. *I'm sold on this bulb now that I tried it. your frags will grow like crazy under the light....just be sure to add atinics or you won't like the colour.
When you get a DIY section, I'll send pics of my DIY hood with this set up.

Re: 400w MH Ballast/Bulbs/Reflectors
Guys,
I have 3 - 6500K - 400 watt Iwasaki's installed in my 6" 110 Gallon and they are awesome. I switched from the 250 watt Venture bulbs and man what a difference with the light in the tank. Bit of a green tint to them, but when you add the VHO super Actinics all is well. I recommend these highly... and Ivan's prices are the best I have seen.

Re: 400w MH Ballast/Bulbs/Reflectors
just a note, IWASAKI is now working on a actuall MH light for 250w and 400w. It should be out in the fall and I imagine it will be whiter! The bulbs we now use from IWASAKI are for MV ballasts but work just great on a standard ballast.[but most of you knew that]

Re: 400w MH Ballast/Bulbs/Reflectors
Gordo, were you not running the EYEs on special ballasts? (MV's vs MH?)
I would like to go back to Iwasakis from my venture 5500's (400w) but I hated the coloration of them back when I used to run them. Mind you, I had only NO Actinic then.. now I have 3 x 5' VHOs.

Re: 400w MH Ballast/Bulbs/Reflectors
Hey Fishysan,
Yeah I switched my MH ballast for the MH/MV ballasts. Wasn't that big of a deal to do, although you can (not sure I recommend it) run the Iwasaki on regular MH ballasts. I'm sure it will not run them as efficiently as the Metal Halide Mercury Vapor ballasts (may end the bulbs life prematurely? or under or over power them? Or maybe nothing who knows ). If you are interested I can get you the ballasts for around $80.00 (They only power one light per ballast) and are very simple to wire up and then the bulbs from Ivan. If you do switch make sure that the bulbs have the following code on them:
METAL HALIDE LAMPS - EYE CLEAN-ACE
MT400DL/BH-E39/41R
EYE - IWASAKI ELECTRIC CO., LTD. JAPAN.
Hope this helps.
