    Plans for a canopy.

Well I have not been able to find a canopy that I like for sale at one of the stores. So I think I am going to build one to incorporate my future lighting into it. My question is, do any of you guys know of any sites or books that contain plans on a diy job. I am capable of doing a one off but I need some more ideas on design. I am still doing searches.

search in the photopost, i bet you will find something.
if not, i know rc will for sure.

i'd say, first thing is you need to know what lighting you plan on putting in it, and this will determine some of the specs ( height specially ) and some of the air inlets outlets that will be needed.

have you chosen a material ? wood, acrylic, steel ?
usually, the easiest way is to have it sit on top of the tank and using the sides as a stopper like a backwards "L" this way it stays on tight and u hide that black trim if any.

if you go with acrylic, you will need a wood or steel frame under it to hold up the lighting. think about fans too.. nice air circ will cool this thing down. opt for bigger fans with slower rpm so they are dead quiet.
i picked mine up at princess auto on sale for like 5$ each they are ~6"x6"x1" and run on 12v.. it was still too noisy at 12v for me.. so added huge ceramic resistance to lower voltage to 9v.. now i get very nice flow.. and its dead quiet. for powersupplies, i found that laptop powersupplies are the best, quiet, barely any heat and have the proper amps to power the fans properly.
these can be purchased at computer recyclers for ~5-10$. ( 12v 4amps ibm with green led )

so i'd gather all the things u plan to put in it.. then figure what size, doors if any and model u want.

    hope this helps.

moving.. so temporarily out of SW :b8:
planning next tank, possibly 60x30x20 on 2x plasma.

I am going with to t5 ho actnics and then to 175 MH. I am going to use 1/2 pine or cherry (which ever I find cheaper) and do exactly what you said with the "L" brackets. I just have to figure out my height and opening for the front. I am currently gathering the material to convert my coralife lunar fixture over to t5. I just have to go to the electrical store to get the stuff.

    Here's a hood I'm currently working on.

I designed it (with some help from a member over at aquariacentral.com) so that it has 2 piano hinges. one, for regular feeding, and the other for changing bulbs etc.
