    Post Sump to Lights

    Hey guys, first thread here.

    Right now I have a 29gal bowfront tank with nothing special in it, the tank is a few days short of a month old. The nothing special consists of;
    • 2 Electric Blue hermit crabs
    • 1 Black Brittle Star
    • 1 Black Spiny Urchin (name?)
    • 1 White w/ Purple Tips Urchin (name?)
    • 1 Six Line Wrasse
    • 1 Okinawa Goby
    • one (maybe two) Bristle Worms[remove or keep?]

    Filtration/Maintenance;
    • Fluval 205 canister [mechanical filtration~filter pads, activated carbon, live rock rubble, bio noodles]
    • 25 lbs LR
    • 3 Inch sandbed (still seeding)
    • Mag-Float glass cleaner (not important but heh)
    • Deep Six calibrated Hydrometer
    Movement;
    • 1 Hydor Koralia1
    • Fluval 205 canister
    Temperature;
    • Marina External Strip
    • Marina Floating Thermometer w/ suction cup
    • 1 Neptune 100w
    • 1 No-name 100w
    Supplies;
    • Tetratest Laborett
    • Prime Conditioner (use R/O anyways)
    • Reef Crystals mix
    • Ocean Nutrition Formula One Marine Pellet
    • Brine Shrimp

    I already have my sights set on springtime, in my basement bedroom I currently have a 55 gallon tank currently used to hold my dad's pond fish over the winter (shel cracked on pond). Come springtime, I plan on converting my 55 into a reef tank. I intend on building a sump + fuge so I will need recomendations on sizes etc so I can start to gather my supplies to be ready for Spring. I have a line on a nice adjustable pump for the sump but still need to do more research. As of yet my shopping list goes as such;

    • Sump tank
    • Lights
    • Egg Crate
    • Pump
    • Skimmer
    • Sand (recomendations, not live)
    • Base Rock/Live Rock
    • Heaters
    • Powerheads
    • Refractometer
    If you guys can think of things that wouold benefit me in future or right now please LET ME KNOW!

    it looks like you have already done a lot of research and are well on your way.

    just a quick tip, in SW we try to stay away from any mechanical filtration as it tends to trap detritus which will break down into nitrates and begins to foul your water ( and cause algae growth ). your LR will handle the first portion of the nitrogen cycle ( NH3 - NO2 - NO3 ) so the bio-noodles are not needed and add to the mechanical filtration problem. running carbon is good but you have to make sure it isn't trapping detritus either. if you're going to use mechanical filtration you need to make sure you keep it clean.

    for feeding there are better meaty foods than brine shrimp, try some mysis shrimp ( high protein ) next time and use it very sparingly. it is best to thaw it on paper towel and rinse with RODI to help prevent fouling your water, especially without a skimmer.

    and post a couple pics when you get a chance :b16:

    haha, thanks for the reply, i am looking into better foods and am really trying to grab a skimmer. i clean the mechnical portion of my filter every thursday, no exceptions, also, should i choose to replace the noodles, what should i replace it with?

    i forgot to add that for lighting i have a single tube t5 24"actinic bulb and i believe a t8 18 inch (the standard for crap starter kits

    nothing, your LR can handle everything they do. if you choose to leave them, just clean them as well. if you look at most of our systems we have nothing like these ( noodles or balls ) and our systems work just fine. in my ~170G system ( 120G tank, 60G sump, RDSB ) i have absolutely no mechanical filtration, the LR turns NH3 into NO3 then my RDSB takes care of the rest.

    we also have a good CUC and use skimmers ( removes DOC's ) and refugiums ( NO3 and PO4 can be exported by growing macro algae ) to reduce the amount our LR has to deal with but we get the job done with no mechanical filtration.

    i'm guessing from the ugh that you now know the CBS will likely eat the peppermint shrimp, especially in a 29G. they are are very territorial and are know to go after other inverts, especially other shrimp.

    you would be better off the buying a bottle of phyto next time your at the LFS, it would be very easy to overdose a 29G and you don't know how long you'll need it for :b10: its to bad they even sell these guys, they catch everyones eyes.

    good luck and hopefully the CBS decides to be nice and share the tank :b16:

    no ceriths, offtopic but does anyone know where i could find trochus in the area hamilton-niagara falls.

    and you are very right thats why the ugh is there and my signature changed. i had onyl read about them attacking bristle worms which i was okay with. so far he only pesters my six line, other than that i feed him mysis shrimp twice a day, and he only ever hangs under a ledge or follows an urchin. i am picking up a lot buy tomorrow i wonly wanted the two false percs and skimmer but i cant do anythign about it and am stuck with an eel, yellow tang, and blue damsel for now anyone interested dirt cheap. the eel tang and more than likely damsel depending on how he fits in. or you could even adopt them, preferably im not giving them away though :\

    you just have to get lucky, i found some beautiful banded trochus a few years ago but haven't seen them since. there are other snail that will do the same job............

    it gonna be tough to find a home for an eel but shouldn't be a problem for the others, if it is trade them at you LFS.

    i may not buy the fish now, the woman is for a lack of a better word, "GOON"

    she wants to collect it all from the tank, drive halfway to me, transfer it all to my bins, then have me drive home.

    anyone in agreeance that i should just go their remove all the LR myself, the fish etc and move it all myself as opposed to stressing the fish more than nescessary?

    it would be better to do it all in one action, especially with the outside temp these days. the LR would probably need to be cycled again and and the fish would be very stressed at the least.

    how far away is she??
