    Red face Canopy Painting Question

When I originally built my (wooden) canopy, I must have used the wrong white paint for the inside. It's progressed to the point of having paint flecks falling into the tank. Even some of the bare wood is looking nasty.

The canopy currently houses 2-250w MH and 4-110w VHO, plus fans.

I'm going to rebuild it..any suggestions for the proper paint to use?

    Thanks

I would think an outdoor oil based would probably work well. I have always just sealed the wood with a polyurethane, but my hoods have never been completely sealed on top.

a marine paint would be best but a good oil or acrylic should do the trick. to have the best success painting, you need to properly prepare the material first. oily / dirty / damp / nonporous / sharp surfaces need to be properly treated to allow the paint to stick.

good luck and post some pics of the new canopy, great for giving the newer guys ideas how to do it :b15:

ya.. marine paint.. and clean surface deeply and sand it down using a strong grit.. like 80 size... you may want to prime it as well.
depending on the material you are going to use, some will bind more by nature and also will need different paints, primers etc.

what materials you intend to use on the new setup ?

You could ask Johnny Rocks. He painted his hoods many times.

I've always used Tremclad gloss white and have never had any issues on about 4 or 5 hoods and stands. I just sand then caulk and add 2 coats.HTH.
