    Balcony over aquarium.

    Howdy aquarium folks.

I've been working on welding the railing for the kids' balcony. Those of you who have been to the house will remember that it is over the aquarium. The kids' room is now mostly finished with the floors down and the doors to the balcony hung. Here's a picture of what the balcony looks like over the aquarium with the new railing in place.

Thanks, guys. I'm really happy with how the balcony turned out. The green board above and below the aquarium is going to be covered in 12" x 12" slate tiles right up to the balcony.

The house is very unfinished. I'm working away at it while I'm on parental leave.

how do you like installing slate Hank ?
I haven't done any yet, but ive been tempted a few times

how about maintenance and durability.. last time I wanted some I was worried i'd rub my feet on edges sticking out a bit since some are uneven.

We really like the slate. It's nice for someone who isn't an expert because the tiles aren't quite square. I line up the bottom or trailing edge in a straight line then let the top or leading edge go where it will. Next row I line up the bottom edge or trailing edge in a straight line again. It takes a bit of work to sort the tiles so that you've got tiles that are about the same thickness and it takes a lot of care to set them so that they are relatively even. Where I have them on the floor I cut them into 4" x 4" squares. The unevenness sort of averages out and I find them quite comfortable to walk on. I had one edge in a shower that was too high and I just took it off with my angle grinder and an abrasive wheel.
