    DIY Lighting

Would somebody mind listing everything I would need to buy to do my own NO DIY Lighting ? I know I need a reflector, WH 7 and end caps but do I also need a fan, ned to build a canopy, etc....

I've found the following guide online
    http://www.lkraven.com/Aquarium/DIYLighting.htm

does this guide make things more complicated than this needs to be ?

    thanks,
    Nick.

nbreau... the WH7 will only power VHO and Power Compact lights.  You'll need end caps, wiring, a canopy(can give you my design) and a reflector.

That link you provided looks fine but I didn't notice an opening(to feed the fish).  I guess this model would be ok on a smaller aquarium.  I have a half dozen WH7's coming in next Tuesday and will be building a DIY WHY VHO lighting.  I'll post picks as soon as I'm finished.
    Hope this helps.

okay, so if I wanted to go with a DIY VHO setup for a 48" tank would I need 2 ballasts, 2 refecltors, 2 sets of end caps, wiring and 2 bulbs ? would i need anything else; how important is a fan ?

If you can take pictures and notes of each step as you build your lighting I don't mind html'ing it so you could add it to your site... maybe have a DIY section simillar to the FAQ section... just a though.

    Re: DIY Lighting

    220 watts
    -1 ballast
    -1 reflector
    -wiring
    -2 sets of endcaps

    440 watts
    -2 ballasts
    -1 reflector
    -wiring
    -4 sets of endcaps

I haven't yet found the need for a fan.  I do know for MH lighting 99% of the reefers use a fan to cool things down.

The DIY section sounds great... I'll create the section tonight and then we can add members DIY designs.

    Thanks nbreau

last question... is it 2 sets of end caps per bulb, or one bulb per end cap ? and do you sell and how much are the VHO bulbs ?  Depending on the price for all this hardware and bulbs, I'll probably place an order as soon as it all comes in.  I might as well build my lighting while i keep looking for a tank...

If you are going with 4 VHO bulbs, 2-ballasts I would suggest adding two fans, I to blow in the other to blow out. You can buy 12Vdc computer fans and a cheap 12 Volt adaptor. As for bulbs, that depends on what you colour you prefer, myself I have 2 URI AQUASUNS and 2 URI Super Atinics
