    overflow box external

As some may know I'm building my own LARGE tank. I'm at the external overflow box now. I have a sheet of 1/4'' glass. I'm thinking possibly to use this for the box. its definatly thinner than the tank but really it will only have a few inches of water and the bulkhead drains. I also took TOUTOUCHES advice and will brace this box from the bottom with 2 angle glass pieces just for added strenght. Do you think 1/4'' will do? I could easily go 1/2'' [12mm] but that would be more $$$$

IMO 1/4 inch will be more then enough johnny unless this box is VERY long .. and even then braces would do the job. I used to make all my own sumps out of salvaged 1/4 glass and never had an issue with it. Just make sure it is well bonded to the tank.

johnny I have a hand held glass cutter but it is old and in rough shape. I have not used it in at least 7 years. They are pretty cheap for the simple single wheel types. I got mine for about 7 bucks some time ago. Just out of curiosity ... why have a box at all?? On my new tank I intend to just use a threaded elbow with the hose barb end and cut it to the hight of the water line I want. I will saw the teeth right into the top edge of it and water will flow directly into the sump supply line.

John, that 1/4" glass will be just fine... it's only an overflow box after all and won't be holding any large static volume of water.
    It's not junk, it's un-assembled DIY!
