    hmm... 28" height only?
If you're like me, you won't be happy with that height. If possible, make it atleast 35" height. You'll be happy you did.

My current stand is 28" tall, I bought it this way, and I'm always telling myself that my next stand will be WAY taller. I find myself looking down at the tank, unless I'm sitting down in a chair.

It makes it hard to appreciate your tank this way... Trust me.

Also, by making it 35" tall, you give yourself lots more room under the tank in case you wanna place a skimmer in the sump underneath...

Personnally, i'd even go 40" tall... But that's just me....

I agree with Vince, 35" minimum and you could always buy a little step stool[I just steal my wifes].

go with at least 32'' to 35'' you wont be sorry
as tang man/ johnny said a step stool is the way to go
far better trade the extra hight will be than not being able to fit in the skimmer under there.
mine just fits in there and i would hate to think of what it would be like even 1 inch lower big pain. the stand i have is at 35'' and a few more would not hurt either.

Could anyone comment as to wether the following design would be of suitable strength for a 77gallon ? It seems to have less support beems than the previous design but I like it since it is much simpler....

I actually like that design...its simple...your looking at roughly 800 lbs... this stand should do you fine.

That design looks good to me too... Maybe bring it up to 35" in height though, as I said before... You'll appreciate having the room under the stand.

Here's another idea that I plan on incorporating on my next stand:

    - Don't use hinged doors for access to the stand. They tend to rust over time, and even break.
    - Instead, Make the whole panel removable in two parts (like big swing out doors) but instead of hinges, use magnets, or even plastic connector/clamps, or even velcro (I don't like velcro much though).

By doing it this way, you gain a LOT of access underneath your tank, don't have to worry about rusting hinges, or having a small door in your way.

If you do end up using hinges, think of coating them with vaseline once they're mounted. This will help keep moisture off them so they don't rust.

nice tang_man... I like the idea for the doors... magnets would work great.
