I would go stainless steel. Alum. will corrode and get that white powdery surface and will not stay reflective over the long haul.

I'm a marine engineer and we run 18 - 10 and 18 - 8 grade stainless in a a lot of high heat situations on board. that being said some stainless is better than others. COuntry of origin plays a roll, some use more nickle and copper and that than others. If you can get some heat tempered reflective glass or something simular use that. Good luck with it all.

a miror is still more expensive and heavier than a stainless sheet.

I don't want the canopy to be too heavy on the tank.

I already used 1x3 and 2x2 to build it (with oak 1/8 exterior)

    here's the inside frame...

I would also agree to go Stainless steel.
Mirrors are actually supposed to be bad to use because of the fact that the light has to travel through the thickness of the glass to reach the reflective silver backing in order to be reflected down. On doing this, the light gets diminished as far as the UV rays for the same reason a piece of glass is used to stop the UV rays on DE MH bulbs.

I would also agree with DR. toutouche getting to the problem of hot surface install two muffin fans on each end that go on when the flourescent go on first then the MH lamps that way your fans will be on to cool that area
