    My DIY euro skimmer

So here it is. This uses a DIY needle wheel and 2 MJ powerheads, a 1200 for the main intake and a 600 for recirculation. It cost just about $40 in parts, excluding the powerheads. The MJ600 intake it at the top of the lower clear container and returns down at the bottom, increasing air contact time.

I just cleaned it out and within about 20 min this is what was spewing out

The return determines the level of the water in the skimmer and I also have a ball valve on it. It then puts the water back next to the tank return to come through the baffels again.

That looks pretty slick, you should give us a shot of the collection cup filled so we can have an idea what color skimmate it gives,
Also i'd love to see how you built it !

so far the skimmate isnt the darkest I have seen, but I believe thats because I dont have it in it's final/best position. It does do well though. I need to put it directly in the return section of the sump, instead of where it currently is.

I really should have taken pics of the stuff I used, but I got over anxious to get it working heh. I basically did the same type design as the EAP skimmer on RC, just with what I could find rather than what they listed. Took me about an hour at Canadian tire going between the plumbing and tupperwear sections fitting things together

    Quite impressive!
I'd be interested in seeing a profile shot of the skimmer itself when you get a chance...

you made the needle wheels yourself? please elaborate. i am also interested in building a needle wheel skimmer but the modified sedra pumps that are used in ER skimmers are hard to come by these days.

    VancouverReef,
Do a search on this site for Needlewheel.
I posted a thread on a DIY needlewheel impeller made out of a bio-ball
