    Building Custom 5' tank

I am planning to use some 12mm (1/2") salvage glass to construct a tank which is 60" long, 30" high, & approximately 13" deep. I have on hand sufficient Hagan plastic bottom trim moulding from a 130G tank.

What procedure do I use to assemble the pieces? I need to know this beforehand in order to determine exact size that glass panes should be cut.

Do I make use of the bottom trim in the assembly process or do I just slip it on later?

Should I have the glass shop do anything to the edges of the glass?

Is there a web-site I should go to where the assembly procedure is illustrated?

I am hoping to have glass cut today or tomorrow & would appreciate input soon. Thanks.

Salty, chances are the 12mm glass will blow out at 30" tall, I wouldn't exceed 24"

Jerry is right.. for 30high.. you will need 3/4" or 19mm

moving.. so temporarily out of SW :b8:
planning next tank, possibly 60x30x20 on 2x plasma.

I have a 48"x 18"x 24" Hagan 90G which appears to be made from 10 mm glass. Does the fact that my proposed tank is only 13" wide make any difference to the glass thickness recommendation? Would a glass top brace and/or 5' metal angle iron welded to the top of the metal stand make a difference? Could I get by with 10 mm glass on the ends. Where does one find information about this sort of thing?

1/2 inch glass will do the job if you euro brace.

    Cool

while bracing does help I'd be very worried about 12mm on 30'' high tank. 10mm even worse.don't forget that the thinner the glass the less contact of silicone. I used 12mm on my tank but I had it tempered and braced like crazy!! just spend the extra $$ and go 19mm

For anyone interested in building a custom tank I found the 2 links provided by Papafish & Toutouche to be instructive, particularly the latter. I believe that I am now ready to go ahead with the project. I have decided to use all 12mm glass with Eurobacing on the top & to weld angle iron to the top ot the metal stand. Thanks everyone for your feedback. I will let you know how it turns out.
