    overflow box design?

This will be my 2nd attempt at building a overflowbox with acrylic. The first design works but i had a few small air leaks that cause the suction to weaken and if the power is cut air slowly seeps in and my tank over flows.

the first one has a air trap just after the water flows over the tank. Do i really need this? I dont have much room in the last stage of the box. only 4". once i place the bulkhead that space is almost gone. will the water level ever rise above the water level in the tank? last question... is a 3/4" drain to the sump the standard size?
