    overflow box ?

I have a 3/4 drain line from my overflow box to my sump. I find that with a mag 7 return pumping almost 6' head is to much flow? Is my overflow line to small? Im also thinking about adding a T fitting to allow some air into the line. will this speed up the flow and reduce the noise?

My overflow box is a DIY 7" in width.

Mag 7 at 6' head should push 400 GPH.

    According to RC's overflow calculator:
    http://www.reefcentral.com/calc/drai...0&drain=Submit
You should have a minimum .83" diameter drain pipe. The 7" overflow is okay, it recommends 6" minimum.

Adding the tee and air intake will make it quieter and improve the flow a little, but, you should probably plan to limit the flow from the Mag 7 for now.

    Try something like this:

As you open the valve (the red line), more and more water will simply flow back to the sump.

As the pump and lines gunge up, the flow will reduce and you can close the valve a little.

i have a ref/sump so there is some flow going into that area. i also have a ball valve to adjust flow into the tank and into the ref area. both valves are about 10% open. And i thought a mag 5 would'ent do the job. looks like i need to change the line over to 1".

should i downsize the pump? will restricting the flow shorten the pumps life span?
