    sterilisation of food grade containers...

I got my hands on 2x 45gallon coke sirop containers. I will use those for the water storage on my next tank. They were throughly rinced by the company, but I want to make sure they are as clean as possible.

soo, whats your recipe ? :P

Pressure wash them out and then fill them. Let the water stand for at least 24 hours and check the PH. Also check the PH on mixed up saltwater the first few uses. The syrup wouldn't be poison like harsh chemicals but if it has leached into the plastic it could change the PH of future use stored water. If the insides of the containers looks smooth and is not all scratched up that would not likely have happened. I would be inclined to think that they are made of high quality food grade plastic.

If there is any residual syrup in them I don't think bleach would remove it. HOT water would be the key but DON'T run hot water through your pressure washer. I can also say that sometimes the product that the container is used to carry never contacts that container. This is because often times the product is inside food quality plastic liners or bags inside the container. The container just controls the weight. That also makes cleaning easier for the original user. You could also do the same thing if you can find food quality bags or liners that are big enough.

ah ha !.. you are right again Rob, i think there was a liner because its too clean to have anything in it.
I rinsed them throughly first with the pressure washer ( inside and out ) then I added 1 cup of javex to each container just to be safe and filled them up to the top. I will leave them like that for 24hours like you said. then throughly rinse them out.

    thx Rob

I'm happy i found those, they fit perfectly and are completly food safe.

I found a recipe on the net for washing wine bottles..
1 tbsp of javex, 1tbsp of baking soda, i did the same.. but in bigger concentrations.

note: I got them at Cohen ... 25$ ea.
