    lighting

Hey guys, Looking at building a canopy for my 75gal tank(FOWLR). Planning on using normal flourescent lights, leaving space for upgraded lighting later if desired. Is there a difference if I use 48" tubes (currently being used) running the lenght of the tank or can I go with a shorter bulb facing front to back. Any advice or oppinions. New to this DIY thing.

You'd need way too many tubes to run them front to back to fill your 4 foot canopy. You'll probably have to use the 12" 15watt bulbs, which means that even if you filled your canopy to the hilt with these bulbs, your penetrating power (intensity) is still at 15 watts. YIKES!

Wouldn't it be easier to just run two or four 48" 40 watters?

    Cool

if thats the case,FOWLR then you might want to look into the WORKHORSE 7 or 8 ballast and T5 lighting. you could stick with NO lamps with out a problem.

George, thanks for the input, 48" does seem easier. I was just looking for some feedback and ideas.

    Thanks for the ideas Johnny

From a cost point of view, 48" is a much better choice. As 4' tubes are the most desired, they are mass produced meaning they are also the cheapest respectively.

Since mguy's question seems easily answered, how about a oddball longer tank like 6' (72x24x18)? Is it cost effective to pay more for the 6' blubs or go with more of the shorter ones? I just saw the nice double ended endcaps on Reefmuts thread.
