Post Looking to bulid a new hood for my tank...

I just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas on how to do this, I want to have it open at the front for maintance, and it must house 2 48" florecent bulbs. Other then that I don't know what I am going to do. I need to know what components I need, such as caps, reflectors, ballests etc...and where I might find them.

    Thanks
    Scott

in Ottawa you can find the lighting hardware you need either on this site, at Marinescape, or big als.

The material to build the hood...Rona or home depot. Get the lighting hardware first before building the box. 48" lights will not fit into a 48" space.

    ...just started of course

One day my daughter asked me for Nemo. Here we are thousands later and I'm just getting started.

Be sure to add in some fans, especially if u plan oh MH lighting or even VHO, those bulbs can get hot enough to heat your tank. I also recomend painting the inside of the canopy white, this will help act as a reflector. As for components, did you check the online store here?

I've always built my own canopies and stands, it's cheaper and you can custom make it to your needs. Just go to any aquarium supply store and look at the canopies they have for sale, get the dimensions, and try to duplicate it. Home Depot can cut the wood to size for you, for a fee of course, all your wood would be pre cut. All you have to do is assemble the pieces.

    Good luck

Great thanks, are there dual light fixtures or do you have to build 2 single ones side by side? I am in the Kingston area, so I can get the stuff from home depot.

I have everything contained in one canopy, two VHO's, two MH's, moon lights, and two fans.

yeah, I figured it would all be in one, but did you use reflectors, if so is there a dual one, or just singles, also do you need more then one ballest?

What you want is 2 of these:

They are incredibly efficient. Worth every penny. They also give your a place to mount your VHOs. Buy the reflectors first and then build the hood to be about 1" longer than the combined length of the reflectors.

Blow two fans down the middle and you are all set.

Yeah, using two 24" reflectors, 2 ballast for the MH's, and 1 ballast for the VHO's.

I purchased a light fixture on ebay and then screwed it in to my homemade canopy.
    no reflectors or painting required
