Question How to make reef plugs....

I am running out of small pieces of rocks to attach frags onto and was thinking of making some reef plugs.
So far I have the garf recipe : http://www.garf.org/news4p2.html bottom of the page.
But they mention 12 hours in vinegar then rince and use... is that enough of should curring be longer?
and will I be able to find portland #3 in Montreal?
Has anyone made their own plugs here? and what recipe did you use ?

    Thanks in advance!
    Carol

    Hi Carol,

I rarely use cement plugs, but do often use flower plugs, these are tha same little holders you get at the florist which each stem is in,they are quite inexpenisve.
I fill it with some arragonite cut a X on the rubber top and insert the frag in it.
Then you plant it any where..in cracks, sand bed ect the coral grows over it quite fast.

You should be okay following GARF's directions. To add to it though I'd store the plugs you're not using in a bin under the run-off from your RO/DI unit.

That will keep them all quite well rinsed and move the curing along

    Cheers!

Also, if you want to quickly and easily cure small pieces of agrocrete (such as pugs), put them in your toilet tank.

I've made my own from crush coral, sand, and plastic shavings from cutting PVC. I used the PVC for the mold to make the Plugs. I cut the pvc in 1" pieces. When you put the mix in, don't pack it to much.
Here is a plug I made with green star.

I used portland cement. I used 2 cups crush coral, 2 cup white play sand, 2 cups plastic shavings, and 1.5 cups of cement. Let it dry for 2 days (tops) and cure for 24hrs in white vinegar. After the vinegar, you will noticed the plugs are a bit smaller. Some of the mix will fall off leaving a not so perfect circle. (it looks better that way)

OK what portland did you use? Because we cannot find portland # 1 2 or 3 anywhere near Montreal I can find #10 or N type only.

    Very nice plugs BTW.
