    canopy vs pendant lighting

I'm looking at a lighting system for my 180 gal. I'm leaning toward the cooltouch pendant lights (3 x 250 MH). Are there any big down-sides to pendants?

U have to hang them off your roof...

depending on where u got ur tank placed... that could be an issue

mine is in the main foyer... theres a high ceiling for chandeliers... so... heh

The house I'm living in is poorly made, but does have a low enough ceiling to hang a pendant, I was just wondering if the light scatter from between the tank and the light was a big deal.

The cooltouch pendant is one piece hanging reflector with three bulbs ( and VHO or PC added on if you want) Ivans got them here. I just didn't want to get blinded while walking around the living room.

If you are looking for straight out PAR for the dollar it is hard to beat SE XMs in PFO parallel reflectors. I went pendants for my 180 (RO IIIs). They are very nice, but I don't think I got any more light than my earlier single ended setup.

In any case, I would build a hood around the tank. The glare from pendants can be unpleasant (particulary if you are sitting down looking slightly up into the tank).

I have a cool touch 2 x 250W pendant and I'm quite pleased with it. The only thing I would do differently would be to specify where I wanted the power cords.

They custom build everything, so if you go with one plan it out exactly how you want it.

As far as glare goes, the dinner table is right beside the tank. My only complaint is that my 3 year old spends more time watching Dory & Nemo than he does eating.

No glare problems even when sitting, if the pendant is correctly hung. Taking pictures is a completely seperate issue though

    Cheers!
There is nothing so permanent as a temporary measure.
