    star fish mounting each other

    My son asks:

Why does one starfish climb on top of the other?

Is this reproduction, or a dominance thing ?

    Anybody know?

    Thanks!

I think it's likely more they both wanted to be in the same place at the same time. I can't think of a single example of a starfish social order & that's required for it do be a dominance thing.

Starfish also reproduce in 2 ways. 1) division. Break off a leg with enough of the central disk & it grows a new starfish. 2) they release gamets (sp?) into the water & hope another starfish fertalizes them.

They don't need to mount for either activitiy.

    Cheers!

No he actively parks himself over the other on a regular basis- and stays there for a day or two. With a 180 gallon he has plenty of room to go elsewhere but will find her (if it is even a her) where ever she goes. I am thinking that I will have to explain the facts of life soon.

Sexual reproduction for echinoderms is external. There are male & female starfish, but they don't have sex. They don't have the body parts required for it.

What kind of starfish? Is the bottom one injured in any way? Or did something get stuck to it's back? The other starfish could be cleaning it, or eating it. Or it could be passing by & it fell asleep

    Cheers!

My 8 year old used to watch Battlestar Gallactica with me. Then at the start of one of the episodes, it had Starbuck in bed with Baltar.

My daughter looked at me & asked: "Do you like to get naked, lie on top of Mommy & kiss her?".

So I did the only two rational things I could think of:

    1) I turned to her and said " Eeewww No way!!! that's GROSS!".
    2) She no longer watches BSG with me.

    Cheers!
