CLAM: Pinched Mantle???
Hey
It's been a while since i posted anything.
I guess things were going good up to yesturday.
My Maxima clam is acting weird.
I've been doing reading regarding gapping/pinched mantles.
I think my clam is suffering of the Pinched Mantle.
On the clamsdirect.com site, they mention Fresh Water Dip as a cure for pinched mantles. I am somewhat weary of doing this as I am unsure if it is PINCHED MANTLE.
Has anybody ever experienced this?
Did the clam make it?
What did you do to save it?
Here's a pic
Thanks

thats not pinched mantle.
how close is it to that coral? are you running carbon?
what is your fish / invert list??
what are your water params? ( SG, temp, pH, Alk and Ca )
how do you maintain Alk & Ca?
have you looked for pyramid snails?
any new additions??

It was very far from the Torch when this started happening!
I recently moved it to this location..
It seems to be doing better here!
I recently added a carbon bag...
I don't have any test kits...So don't know my water parameters.
I guess i'll be picking some up tomorrow.
Anybody in Russell?
LOL
I do add BIO CAL...
ALK... nothing.
I have very little livestock.
2 skunk clowns.
1 Bi-colour Blenny
2 cleaner shrimp
That's it...
I also have another CLAM in the TANK.
The 2nd one seems fine.

I was unaware of this desease til you posted this so take my advice with a grain of salt....
If your clam was happy in the past.. and nothing was added, and I suspect your problem is most likely not that. It may be stressed by another factor ( fish picking at it, snails, shrimps. )
If you do not see anything bugging it during the day, I suggest you spy on it a few times over the night and see if any critters might have develloped a taste for clams.. and if so, remove it.
but, if all fails, then as a last resort.. id definitely try that cure as suggested on many sites.. ( freshwater, close to same ph and temp ) for a good minute while shaking it so make sure water gets in.
let us know what you decide.
moving.. so temporarily out of SW :b8:
planning next tank, possibly 60x30x20 on 2x plasma.

I have my money on water param issues. Would be really interested to see your specs.
Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated!

i have dealt with PM before....
that looks more like a parameter ( very sensitive to Alk ) or fish problem.
the bi-color blenny is known to nip at clams. sit back and watch him or cover the clam with 1/2 a pop bottle with holes in it. this will either clear or convict the fish.
Ca and Alk are very important for clam and have to be monitored and maintained.
while the coral seems to be leaving the clam alone, he puts out sweeper tentacles and can be very aggressive. i would move the clam away from him again. any other coral? ( especially soft )

If this is the case...
why isn't my other clam showing the same behaviour?
