    True Perculas

I was wondering how black True Percs get? Do they have more black in the bars than a False Perc or is the body all black with an orange head? I am trying to determine what I have in my tank but the little bugger won't stay still long enough for me to take a picture.

It's harder to tell them apart as juveniles.... But here's some adult shots.

    Here's a Perc...

Depends on the fish. Some can get almost completely black between their stripes & this colour morph is called 'onyx'.

Basically the older the perc the more black it has, but each fish is different.

False percs get darker, but the black lines stay pretty well defined. It's an easy way to tell them apart as adults.

    Cheers!

Ocellaris clowns have 11 dorsal spines.
Percula's have 9 or 10, but it's not always the case. And it's VERY difficult to count spines on a live fish swimming around.

That info is directly from Joyce Wilerson's CLOWNFISHES book.

Glad You posted those. I can clearly see I have a Oceallaris.

Would it be jaking this thread if I asked about if and how the stripe at the tail can be used to tell age, and how long one should live?
