How do you break-in a skimmer?

Finally got a skimmer. It's all hooked up and running. How do you break-in a skimmer? Should it be run full tilt or should the pump be dialed back abit so the collection cup doesn't fill with water?

the general concensus that I've found on this subject, is to take the skimmer apart and wash it with a mild dishwasher detergeant. This will get rid of all the manufacturing oils off the surfaces. Reassemble it, have the pump running full tilt and set the airflow to it so that you get a nice draw of bubbles...but not enough so that you lose the positive pressure. give it 24 hrs, and you'll see nice dry foam being made quickly. Remember that you will have to adjust it to maintain this flow of foam. I just went back every few hrs and made sure that the flow was set right.

    hope this helps.

    ________quote from the berlin manual________________

Problem : The Skimmer is new (or just cleaned), and doesnít seem to
    be skimming.
Solution : If itís new, clean it with soap and water and rinse thoroughly
with hot water. If itís just been cleaned re-rinse with water.
Allow the skimmer to run for 48 hours before worrying. Skimmers
react to changes in water density; soap and other chemical
residue form the molding process. While this is safe for your
aquarium, it does impede the Skimmerís efficiency for a few
days. Allow a 2 day break in time.

mine doesnt come apart. i figured if u just let it run wet for a while it will eventually clean itself out.
(so far it is like an automatic water change - it pulls out about 5 gal of water per week which i replace with salt water - would that cause any imbalance to my system?)

have a look at that page. In the pics, one has the cylinder in the chamber, the other does not... it has to come apart.
just clean that clear cylinder with mild dishsoap. Make sure you rinse really really well.

    ayooo... sorry dude, wrong pics

hrmmm... if the pump is external on it, then take the whole box, and swoosh it around in some mild detergeant. then rinse well... there's a cleaning brush accessory for it... there has to be some way for the water to get in and out of the thing. maybe taking off the collection cup will let you get the soapy water in. Nice looking skimmer btw.

I set mine up yesterday, ran it for 12 hrs... not much was coming out, just this coloured water. I took it apart this morning, washed it, rinsed it very well, and then set it up again... now it's working beautifully.
