Carbon - how often and for how long?

I was wondering how often and how long people run activated carbon?

I always run carbon in a phosban reactor. I put 1-2 inch only and replace it every 2-4 weeks. Water color as improved alot since I started this.

You're going to get many different answers on this one. I run carbon 24/7 in a fluval canister filter and replace it every two weeks. I don't use any sponges in the canister

The sponges can become a nitrate trap if you didn't open up the canister filter and clean the sponge every two days. It will get clogged up with detritus and uneaten food and could cause problems. I only open it bi-weekly to replace the carbon.

That's a tough question to answer because there are too many variables involved. Tank size, bio load, maintenance etc. In any case every 30 days as a minimum sooner if the tank is heavily stocked or your lazy about water changes and other maintenance.

This month's issue of TFH has a nice little article on carbon use in the aquarium in their "The Skeptical Fishkeeper" section.
