    Week 1

    Well...
It's been a week since i moved the tank.
The fish seem to have adapted really well.
    They started eating more
The damsel seem to be still timid.

I'll try and post a pictures later tonight.

Over the last week i've been itching to add stock to my tank.
    My water parametres are great.
    I've resisted temptation.

I've also been looking @ purchasing lights for my 75gl 48x20x20 (roughly)
    I currently own a coralife PC 2x65w.
I'm thinking of adding some MH.

Where's the best place to purchase the lights?
What would be suffuciant lighting for a tank my size.
I would also like the system to be a little over kill.
My want to purchase a larger tank once i move into a house.

    give me your suggestions.
    Thanks
    Eric

I would go with 2 x 250W MH and Ice Cap MH ballasts. 250W should be fine for what you have, anything longer you might get down the road you could just add another MH and ballast... If you got a much deaper tank, you might want to upgrade to 400w MH....

I would suppliemtn those MH with either VHO Actinic, or T5 actinics.. But what do I know, I still haven't decided on what lighthing I am going to use.

I would check with Ivan here at AC, he can probably get you something like that.. However you would probably save 50% on your purchase if you buy each component seperately and build yourself a canopy.. Even if you aren't a DIY'er, its a good time to start.. However, if money isn't an issue, then one of those units is a decent idea.. If Ivan can't find something, I would check at Marinescape if you are in Ottawa, if not possibly Big Als.

When I was getting ready to buy MH lights I priced out the various components at a couple of lighting wholesale places and found that by the time I had everything I was going to need I was damned near the price of the system I bought from Ivan and it didn't include the nice reflectors or the CSA certification. Overall I probably spent between $50 and $100 more and got a completely assembled system ready to plug and play with the CSA/ULC sticker.

I'm doing a 2x400W MH + 2x 110 VHO actinic with 4 moonlights and PFO reflectors and fans and it has cost me around $1000 tax in. Add in the cost of the hood and you are easily over what the fixture you are thinking about costs. Mind you I could have probably shaved $100-150 by going with cheaper MH bulbs.

The only drawback I can see to a setup like this is limited choice of bulbs but I have one similar to this in a 36" over my 70G and it looks great (and it is only a 150W HQI).

So i'm thinking i'm going to build my own hood/canopy..
And install my own MH and PC setup.

Question regarding building your own canopy.
Do you build it to sit directly ontop of the aquarium?
    or
Do you build a spacer and sit it on top of it!
What's the best wood to use?
anybody have pictures or plans of how theirs sit on the tank.
