    Live rock question...

    Afternoon everyone...

Another question from the new guy.

I have about 10lbs of LR in the 12g Eclipse I have in the living room. Tank has been running 3 weeks with the LR in it, Water is at 79F, Ammonia, Nitrite,Nitrate are all at 0, salinity is at 1.025 (as measured by a calibrated Sybon Refractometer). Bottom of the tank has about 2" of Aragonite as substrate material.
The LR is your basic Fiji(sp?) rock for the two bigger pieces and some Vanuutu(again sp?).
My question is : is it normal for the LR to be turning a brownish colour? (pictures coming as soon as I re-size). I have no other things in the tank except the LR and sw.

    Thanks in advance,

    Jean

your probably just getting a diatom bloom because it is a new setup. You will see all kinds of different coloured blooms in the next little while. It should balance out in time!

Ok, thanks. I should wait before putting any fish (damsel or clown) in?

Just my opinion but I would wait another week and test your water again! If your amonia/nitrite/nitrate levels are still zero then maybe start adding stock slowly. If you are planning on having damsels in there then put one of them in first so if there is a loss, it is not a $30 or $40 one. Again, just my opinion!

Many thanks again for your help. We're in no rush to put some fish in the tank- I actually set it up for my wife and as a primer for setting up the 90g tank in the basement. We'll take it easy and go step-by-step and hopefully get most of it right!
I re-tested the water and nitrite/nitrate/ammonia are all reading 0...new kit , so I assume that it's reading correctly. Salinity is rock steady at 1.025, temp also steady at 79F. Somehow, I must be doing something half-way correctly! : )
