    HOB refuge

Well I was cleaning out the storage room this weekend. (getting out the christmas lights) I came across my hang on back filters I had for the aquarium originally. It is the push in pad style type. I was thinking of putting one of them on the aquarium and putting some cheato and a incandesent light over top of it. 25 watt or so. Will this work with the pump these things have? Also, where can I get some of this cheato and how much do I need? And one more, is there something to add to get the bacteria, algae and bugs growing?

I have seen several hang on filters converted to fuges but I do believe there is one type that is usually used, just can't think of it.

To get cheato you only need a small amount and I am sure a local reefer would give you a little, when they prune theirs back. The bugs and bacteria are already living in your main tank and they will naturally populate you fuge so you don't need to add anything.

For your light get a screw in flourescent daylight bulb, a normal incandescent doesn't have the correct spectrum and the cheato will not grow.

i use the phillips 17W CF daylights bulbs from HD, i think they make a 9W as well that may be enough for your fuge.

sounds like it should work ok as long as you can keep any detritus build up to a minimum. the pump that comes with the filter will probably be fine, you are looking for minimal flow ( approx 3 - 5x display would be optimal )

sounds like a neat little project, good luck :b16:

Nice post. Had a few ideas but that summed it up for me. I think I will build one of these until I get going on my sump/refuge.
