    Lighting confusion.

The whole area of lighting has me confused,I think I'm reading to much differing info..My tank dimensions are 65"L/24"W/20"D,so I will make a canopy to house the lighting system.I've used AH Supply's product,I highly endorse their reto-fit kits(especially with the high loonie),is systems like this viable for a eventual full reef or only good for FW planted tanks?I know I can get the watts I'll need and the spectrum as they have a large variety of bulbs.I believe also,I could be wrong, that my power use would be less than with a MH and VHO combination or some other combo.I would sooner get all I need in an initial set up and as my experience grows I'd like to start with softs to any type of coral (LPS & SPS)with the needed fish to keep it interesting .Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree, so any set up styles or advice would be appreciated. Thanks Greg

if you want to keep SPS i would only be looking at T5HO and MH or a combination of both. can you post a link to the fixtures you are looking at?

    I agree with a4twenty,
    t5ho or mh or both.
    on 20" deep, id go with 2x 250w MH + 3x 24" t5ho.
have a look at lumenarc a3 mini's they would fit perfectly over that tank.
add to that some single t5ho reflectors between and you'd have awesome lighting.
    ex:

    t5ho MH t5ho MH t5ho

moving.. so temporarily out of SW :b8:
planning next tank, possibly 60x30x20 on 2x plasma.

    a 24" T5ho is either 24w or 40w when over driven.
i'm thinking this is a combination of possibly 2x 24" t5ho with regular ballasts.

thats ok, but wont get you on the sps's. add 2 more t5ho's and you'd be way better for sure.

that will partially depend on your set up, most of us use computer fans ( or other small fans ) to vent the hood. ( if you have one ) if you are concerned with the heat from the MH's you could use ( 8 ) 4' t5HO's staggered to cover the 65" length of the tank. and you should still be able to keep SPS anywhere in a 20" deep tank.

PS: those bulbs you linked to are not T5HO, just regular T5.

With a 20" deep tank Id go with just T5HO. JMO . Everything should be fine.
