Not sure if it's even about the item, as you can reply the price and they will agree on whatever the asking price is with no bargain insisting some complex shipping expidinting etc.. just need all your info business kinda thing, I think most likely they are after peoples personal information. So please let this be a warming, and they have multiple email accounts and stories so beware.

That will happen any time you post your email address in a public forum.
Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated!

It may be shady but not illegal. When you post your email address somewhere online (or anything else of that matter), it's public knowledge.

Sending an e-mail may not be illegal but using that e-mail to commit fraud, identity theft, etc. is illegal. Even if I were to post my bank information and PIN on-line, it would be illegal for someone to use that information to take money from my account. It's like finding a wallet on the street: if you take the money out it, you have committed theft.

You got it exactly nickb. Unfortunately unsolicited e-mail whether it be a 'scam' or that annoying friend who always forwards spam to you, it isn't illegal. Can you imagine the money saved on bandwidth and data usage if it was?

Did you see about the major 'bust' in California last week? They closed down a site which responsible for distributing about 75% of the world's spam. I'm not sure what grounds they used but, I've certainly seen a drop off in spam over the past 10 days.
