I did this in the past and I can realy say that their was not a real noticale difference in growth/benifits in my tank, just my HYDRO bill lol, It has been debated that the flow should be increased during the night as this is when alot of corals are extending their polyps to feed.
    Some food for thought

I figure the ocean water doesn't stop flowing when the sun goes down. So why bother shutting off my powerheads. But I do have a calmer cycle that starts at night.

actually its not good for you to do this, it will shorten the life of your power head. just let em run. your not really paying much at all for a few powerheads to run at night especially in non peak hours. plus as mentioned, if you have SPS or certain corals they do feed at night.

ya.. i'm with john..the stop/start will kill your powerheads.. and the wattage they consume is soo minimal.. not sure you would actually notice it.
ocean has slow downs, but never fully stops, it would be bad for the air exchange too around corals.. and to get the warm water circulating properly to keep the tank at an even temp.. also ph drop could occur if it would stop most of the circ...

I wouldn't.. specially to save 2$ a month possibly. most powerheads are like 18-20watts.

    Cheers!

ya.. same here.. specially for powerheads..
youd save a ton more by just converting some of your houses lighting to cfl or other. or even better.. cut the MH hours by 1h less and you'd still save more then shutting down powerheads.

I used to run my first tank's powerheads on random timers.. boy did i learn quickly not to do that

ya.. mp10's are ok.. they are built for that.. and run on magnetic systems.. they dont have the same stress like a jbj or maxi or aquaclear would.. your mp10 are not direct drives.
