    tips on curing LR

Getting back again on a FOWLR in a 90 G tank. Former tanks i have just used cured LR from the LFS. This time thinking of buying Indo LR uncured as i can get it at a better price. I have read about the curing process. I am sure its going to be a stinky month but willing to take that route. Would like to hear your thoughts and share experience on this matter.

i usually just stick it in a large brute garbage pail with a heater and pump ( ~ 600 gph ) on the bottom, pointed straight up. if it's particularly nasty ( sniff test ) i'll replace the water after a couple of days but usually ~ after a week. to change the water i start by removing the water and rock to another container(s), then drain and clean the original container. half fill the container with new SW, put the pump back in and start moving the rock back over. as i move the rock i'll swish it back and forth ( in the old water ) to remove any ugly / nasty stuff, even scrubbing the rock with a brush if needed. i just keep repeating this process until i have no NH3 / NO2 / NO3 in the pail at the end of the week, usually ~3 weeks to a month.

if it's really stinky when you get it, you could do a quick pre-rinse in some SW to knock off the larger stuff. keep the lid on it so no algae starts to grow and the smell shouldn't last more than a week.......... hopefully :b2:
