Tetra Whisper Filter Should I remove it?

One more question. The tank that is now the sump came with a Tetra Whisper Filter/pump, it has some charcoal that is contained in a fibrous bag and some plastic scrubber brushes. I seem to remember reading that this is not necessarily a good thing to have because it is a nitrate trap. I have been rinsing the bag every couple of days because I hear its good to have the charcoal but what about the brushes should I take them out?

Do I need to use it at all?

you can remove them all together, but running charcol is good to keep the smell down, and the water from yellowing. Just keep it in a media bag in a higher flow zone and rinse every few days to remove particles.
