    weird chocolate chip starfish behaviour

I just purchased a chocolate chip starfish and its been top of the tank all day and keeps 2 of his legs half out of the water. But it is moving around but on top.It is a 44 gallon tank and i have a 5 inch volitan lionfish in there that's it.I seen the lionfish go around the star and i wonder if its just because he is curious and the star is intimidated by the lion???

how long did you acclimate it for? They should be acclimated quite awhile. It also could be eating some crud near the top glass.

Ive had a chocolate chip star for the last 2 months.I would say it spends 95% of its time at the top of the glass with 2 of its arms sticking out.

Lots of different types of stars will quite often stay near the top. They feed off of stuff that accumulates at the waterline. An interesting thing they also do often up there is either spread a couple arms out of the water ( maybe it helps them position there center mouths easier at the immediate waterline???) or simply float a few of their arms on the water surface while the rest are attached to the glass. They do this by holding onto the surface tension of the water.

I've had a couple of these stars... kept dying. Do you know if they have a high water condition sensitivity?

    Conan,
ALL stars tend to be sensitive to water conitions. Your tank should be very stable & matured to house a star. Also, they have to be acclimated VEEEERY slowly!!!!
