well of course not to much, because you have less room for mistakes in a small tank. probably up to 5 small fish (like gobies) that wont grow big, and as many corals as you like provided thay have room to grow.
you may also consider a clown/anemone tank.

2 clowns and a goby should be fine.
(it also depends on how much filtration you have).
you can also throw in some inverts if you like, such as a star, or shrimp, etc.

thats enough room for a goby to jump out. make sure you only get bottom dwelling gobies if you get any. those guys will jump out of the smallest holes, you'd be surprised.

A gramma might be okay and firefish are very peacfule. If you get false percs they normaly tolerate roomates better than other clowns. one thing I might add about corals. Choose wisely because some leathers use chemical warfare and others have sweeper tentacles so they do need room to grow and sweep/kill! a 20g there is no room for error as a chemical change can/will wipe out your tank fast! ZOANTHIDS are a great coral to start out with or just go with those in a 20g. there are SO many colors to choose from and there tuff. You could add 1 nice leather or a LPS to this mix. Do you have a canister filter? you could/should run carbon but no media.
