    Silly live rock question

    Hey all,

I like the arrangement in my nano, but I may not have allowed enough space to do anything.

I'm thinking this could be solved by splitting up the rock & rearranging it. So the question is, how do I split live rock?

Do I just get a rock chisel, find a clean spot in my basement & have at it or is there a better way to do it?

Is this going to do anything to my week old cycle or is it mostly a who cares at this point?

    Thanks in advance!

go have fun with it, see if you can carve it to resemble mount rushmore.
chisel should be fine, you will just end up with more surface area on your rock which is a good thing.

When you guys split it, do you put it right on the concrete or am I missing something? Or am I just paranoid because it's my first batch of live rock?

    Thanks again!

i've never split my rock before (only b/c i love BIG pieces) but you can just do it on any surface that you wont break when you miss the rock and bang the chisel on the kitchen counter just as your wife walks in to see what all the banging is about.

he he, any true reefer must have that experience sooner or later, just keep in mind that after you are done explaining what you are doing, you might be required to elaborate on how you've come the believe that your rock is actually "live"

As a suggestion from a guy who knows how to make a mess, if you have a unfinished basement then put down a clean piece of cardboard and use that as your surface. This will help with clean up and help with preventing contamination of your LR.

    Cool

don't ruin a chisel, just use a big flat head screwdriver. I've used this method often. splitting live and base rock.

ya... to split I find that a good old flat screwdriver works best.
also.. put a blanket over it as you dont want possible debries to fly in your face and the rest of your basement.. hammer away

moving.. so temporarily out of SW :b8:
planning next tank, possibly 60x30x20 on 2x plasma.

Course you could always get one of those big ole ones for this type of work...they have about a 3" blade with a big plastic grip in case you miss
