    Substrate - when to add?

I'll be setting up my saltwater tank over the next couple of weeks. Finally!

I have a question about the substrate. Some lists I've visited recommend adding the substrate after the tank has cycled, while others recommend putting it in with the live rock.

    Any opinions on this?

I would at least have the substrate in place under the rock unless you want to tear it down and set it up again. I don't see the advantage to not having the substrate in place during the cycle. The sand also holds a lot of bacteria and the sooner it is seeded the sooner it will be alive. I have never cycled a tank with the substrate not in place.

I thought it was a little odd myself, but it was laid out that way in the How To Set Up A Saltwater Aquarium In 10 Easy Steps article (http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/beg...a/aa011602.htm) on the About Saltwater Aquariums web site.
