I have to dissagree on the silica leaching thing. There actually has been lots of tests done and it has been found that the silica in the silica sand[sandblasting sand, bricklayers sand] actually does not leach at all. Tons of people use it as well as I've used it for a few years. I just don't really like the looks of it. Also, reefsand and aragonite look very good but have almost 0 buffering as it would take a serious ph drop for the sand to start disolving.hope this helps.

    Really John,
I have never heard good things about Silicate Sand. I have seen many people blame algae blooms on Silicate sand but have never actually read studies. So my experience with Silicate sand has only been word of mouth

    Smile JACKETS

there has been lots of threads on this on the RC site and testing as well. I used it for about 1,1/2 years with no problems at all. There was also the arrgument that the glass in our tanks is the same silica and it does not leach. You can do a search on RC and you'll have enough reading material for quite some time. I bought some froma masonary store and it was okay but I like the reefsand as it does look a heck of a lot nicer.

    Very cool.
I'll definitely check it out on RC, Thanks for the info. I don't think I'll ever switch, but you never know, with the constant wants maybe when I upgrade there will be a cheaper alternative in a silicate sand.

    Thanks again
