I post this information in response to those who want more detailed information about the various parts of a well equipped reef aquarium. I will post on other topics related to setup in the future
THE STANDPIPE
The “standpipe” is the part of the setup that is installed inside the overflow box of the display aquarium (see THE OVERFLOW ). The standpipes job is to make the overflow box function quieter. The standpipe dose this by allowing water to almost completely fill the overflow box before exiting the overflow box to the sump (see THE SUMP ). When the water level in the overflow box is raised by the standpipe, the water from the display aquarium dose not have to fall as far when that water enters the overflow chamber. The standpipe also allows air to escape the drain and by doing so it makes the whole overflow system some what if not completely quiet.
There are two popular styles of standpipes currently in use. One of the types in use is called a dorso standpipe and the other is a stockman standpipe.
Instead of explaining how to make them to you I have attached links to the information about each of these stand pipe designs. The people who conceived these ideas can better show you how to make one. I hope the links remain active.
