    Exclamation evil red-eyed attack crab

I seem to of come across my first compatability problem. Over the past 2 months I have noticed my liverock start to bloom. I have seen about 3 crabs - all porcelain - up to this point but tonight I spotted a red eyed twoonie sized solidly coloured jerk. I actually saw this crab pounce on a passing blue legged hermit and rip it out of his shell. I imagine he has been systematically picking them off one at a time to satisfy his unwelcomed hunger. I have referenced all my available books to no avail. I cannot identify him/her and I highly doubt he will pose for pictures. He is a stout looking guy and I hope anyone out there will be able to offer some advice as to how the heck I can get him out of my reef!
55 Gal. with 75lbs of liverock, 2x96w PC lighting and an appetite for much more!

Sounds like the 'boxer' crab I had in my 20g tank at work.
Took me a while to get him out...actually had to take all the LR out of the tank to find him. He's living in my sump now.
    Regards,
    Patrick.

I think it is most likely a type of Mithrax crab. You can try to make a trap to get him out.

I got sooo fustrated trying to get my hell crabs out that I ended up sacrficing the chuck of live rock they lived in to a 5 day freshwater bath.

For the record it takes a loooong time for dead live rock to rengerate. But the crabs are gone.

I'd only recommed that as an act of desperation. The crabs I had figgured every softy in the tank was their personal buffet. So 1 rock or all my softies...

    Cheers!

The other thing to try, if you can remove the rock with the crab is a high salinity dip.

Make a bucket with some 1.05 (yes high) salinity water. And drop the rock in the bucket. At 1.03 salinity, Pat's crab just hunkered down. We used some screw drivers to chip the rock away from the crab's hiding spot. Once exposed, the crab jumped off the rock and into the bucket where we scooped him up and kept him in islolation for a while.

I'd go spear fishing then use him to feed your fish/corals.

Too many crabs to choose from to make such a generalization.

But, evil red-eyed attack crabs, well, they are evil, see. ;-)

I have yet to meet a crab that given enough time, won't turn to the darkside.
