overflow/return pump
I am looking for suggestions on an overflow and return pump. The tank will be a 75 or a 90. The tank will be stand height (built into the wall) and the sump will be on the level below. Looks like at least a 12 foot height.
What sort of flow rate should I consider and what pump would be needed?
Thanks

When talking aquarium flow, Ideally you'd like to consider 10 to 20x the size of the tank.
So a pump like a Mag18 (1800gph) would be ideal with a 2" overflow size.
Hope that helps...

Tang_man... do you think a mag 18 is the best choice since he has a 12 foot head? or should he be thinking of a pump that could handle this more easily. I've read the MAG drive pumps are not a real good choice if you have over 6 feet of head.

Woops... missed that part... Dang. Nice save IJO.
In that case Andrew, you'll need a pressure rated pump, like a GRI or Iwaki...

Van,
I too would recommend either a Gormann Rupp or the Velocity.
Out of curiosity, have you ever actually heard any of the Velocities running? Are they more silent than the Gormann R's ( which are already pretty silent and what I'm using). I'm thinking of getting the biggest Velocity to supply 2 returns from my basement as you've seen it now.
Andrew,
I also have my filter system in my basement and I have the GRI pumping up 14 feet to 1 x 3/4" SeaSwirl and it's doing nicely.
Mags suck big time when it comes to pressure applications or any head
O.K.... I REALLY have to get my head out of the gutter... I laughed when I saw the words "suck big time" & "head" in the same sentence!!!

LMAO... you too huh? I refrained from saying anything though...
Glad to see that I'm not the only one with my head in the gutter.

For those people using an external overflow, what brand and model do you have?
What does everyone suggest I use?
Thanks
Andrew
