I've heard very good things about the one you mentioned earlier..

    Powercompact / Moon-Lite
    48", 4x65 watt, 2-10,000K Premium-Daylight & 2-Ultra-Actinic

You could always go with that one. Just lose the glass top on your aquarium.

    Nighty,
One question that begs to be answered, is this a FOWLR, FO or Reef setup you're planning?

If it's one of the first two, then don't put a crease in your nighty...:

    Hmmph.

    It's actually a reef tank that I'm thinking of ... !

I've heard good things about the Moonlite as well, however they only have the 65 watt available in that series for the 48" and I'm not sure if that's strong enough. How good is 65 watts, compared to the 96 watt non-Moonlite hood?

    Perplexed (not creased),

bad news,65w is definatly not enough for a reef unless you want mostly mushrooms and a few other dark loving corals.
There are some beautiful lighting hoods that can be suspended from the ceiling with thin cables and they come with actinic and MH lighing inside. They even come in silver, blue and black. There also fan cooled. I just can't remember the name but I think there German. Very EURO looking but a little pricey.

Reefvan, I meant 4x65 watts (2 10,000K and 2 ultra-actinic) and 4x96 watts (2 10,000K and 2 ultra-actinic or 03 actinic), which I've read is more than enough to support a variety of coral species.

The Giesemann design looks fantastic, but cables are not an option ...

The picture that ReefVAn posted is one way to do it. I'd definately loose the glass top, and if you are worried about anything jumping out of the tank, then put egg crate over the top. As for the lighting, getting the 4X96W hood do quite well for most applications. And, if memory serves me, you can get "legs" for those fixtures, so if you don't want to hang it from the ceiling, you it will "stand" on top of the tank.

Thank you, bristleworm, and everyone on this list who has helped me mull over the Glass Cover Dilemma (TM).

I think I'm leaning heavily towards the Custom Sealife 4x96 watt PC system. An acrylic lens protects the lights, apparently, and it can be placed directly over the aquarium without any pegs or lifts. This may be easier for me.

I'm learning so much every day; this list is a fantastic resource. What a fascinating hobby.

    Regards,
