    occasional dead hermit

Tank is doing great...my reef crew are finally beating back the hair algae and I can see live rock again. I do, however notice the occasional (5 so far) dead hermit crab. Everything else seems fine. I have caught them fighting for no apparent reason (list of shells to grow into) I am just wondering if this is just that natural way with hermits or if I should be looking for something more sinister. (the water parims seem great)

I appreciate anyones greater experiance with this.

It's a hermit war. They usualy fight for houses (shells).
Get some hermit shells and toss'em in.
So far, I lost only one hermit.

    Also keep a head count.

I have seen what looks like 1 or 2 hermits killing another. And then what looks like a dead hermit out of it's shell.

But, a head count later shows that there are still the same number of hermits moving around. I believe they assist each other in molting.

Anything with an exoskelatin molts, it is the only way for them to grow.

Snails and clams and such grow shells, this is not the same as an exoskeleton.

Hermits simply find / steal / take them.
