ok, I took a pic last night. A bit fuzzy, hopefully you'll be able to see what I mean. The purple nubby thing is hard and it doesn't look alive. What is it and should I knock them all out?

Your rocks look fine. Those are Forams growing just a differnent type and theya re small. They are a good sign. Just sit tight and you are well on your way. If patience is catching up with you, throw in a damsel fish. They are cheap. I would rather just wait for a week or so and keep testing. Tang_Man is right on this one....

The only thing two reef keepers will agree on, is what the third reef keeper is doing wrong!

sorry but I have to disagree about the [throw in the damsels there cheap] practise. There is no price tag on any life[shouldn't be] and many advocate on cycling a tank with damsels just to toss them. There hard to get out of a reef, most stores won't take them back and if you keep them god forbid you want any community fish in your tank. Tanks can be cycled easily with a piece of shrimp. I have done this myself
in the beginning but have seen my error of ways. Nothing personal but I just disagree.
