    Lights out ?

Will my live rock die if I turned off my lights for a week ?

All my corals are basically dead cause of my aptasia, I want to try to kill the aptasia by shutting the lights off completely for a week or more.

I would recommend a couple of pepermint shrimp....they will eat the aptasia.
Some pepermint shrimp do take a liking sometimes to soft corals, but since your's are basically dead, probably not an issue.
    My two cents....

I'm not so sure that a week of darkness will kill off your aptasia.

And to answer your question, No your rock won't "die" without light.

How many aptasia do you have in your tank... just a few or do you have 50+... If you have under 50 or so, you can try Joe's juice. I've recently tried it on the few that I had and it took about 3 seconds to apply and they're gone in a couple seconds. It's been a week and they have not re-appeared. For under $10, it's worth a try.

I tried 'joes juice' on several aptasia..a couple of them kept coming back (tooks a few weeks). Lost patience with them and went with the pepermint shrimp. No aptasia now...no sun polyps either as the pepermind shrimp ate them.
    One evil or another.....decisions decisions.

tiss the bane of aptasia. lights out will not kill them. they could come out a year down the road!!! best best is to get rid of them a bunch at a time.
#1. take HOT vinegar into a syringe [available at drug stores or use an old one from a test kit].

#2. sneak up right into the middle of the aptasia and jam it in there and squirt until you see that suck dissolve. in small doses vinegar will not hurt the tank at all. Thats why I suggest just doing a few at a time. do this until there all gone.
#3. whenever you see one pop up after that resort to steps 2 and 3

Knock on wood, none of mine have come back yet but it has only been one week. I made sure not to touch them with the tip of the syringe as they would retract if I did. I have never tried pepermint shrimp but if they will eat them then it's a more natural approach.
WilWong, you can try pepermint shrimp or Joe's juice but I think this is a better option than turning the lights off unless you have hundreds of them ...if you move your corals to a spot where there are no aptasia, they should come back in time if their needs are met.

I'll chime back in with another vote for Joe's Juice.. I (luckily) only had aptasia in 2 or 3 places. I gave each a shot of Joe's and they never came back (yet).. It's been about 5 months..

    Cheers,
    Chad
