    Aquaclear 70

I was wondering if you guys had any info on using this as a water pump for your sump?

Its rated for about 400gph so i was hoping at 3.5' to get around 300gph for my 27g SW.

I can't seem to find any info regarding this.

I dont think that would work... You mean you want to use this as a return pump? It's not that kind of pump...

The Aquaclear 70 powerhead is the new version of the Hagen 802. It would work as a return pump from your sump, but nowhere near the 300gph you're hoping for at 3.5 feet of head pressure. Take a look at MAG pumps instead. If you're looking for 300GPH, a mag 5 should do it. This is based on no elbows in your plumbing too. A little more water turn-over never hurts. I'd say go for a mag 7 atleast.

all depends how much flow you intend to get, for a 27g, if you get 200gph, its still a good 7 times an hour. I ran 3 802's as my return on my 130g, it was ok, not great, but worked, Your better off to invest on a little mag then those aquaclear. better build, better current, alot more reliable for a return pump.
IJO/Ivan sells them for real cheap too!

well the thing is that i already have the Ac 70. I have a SCWD and to return pipes on order from J&L.

I won't have any SPS so i think that 200 gph might do the job. PLus i want to have some macro algae in my sump so i don't wanna have the flow too fast through the sump.

I like the mags too but they chew up alot of power. I was running 2 mag 12's, each chews up 110 watts per hour. Now I'm running a Rio 2500 and a Rio 17HF instead, they use half the power and still give me over 1,000 gph each. That is one thing to consider too, especially at the current and future hydro rates. But then if you're only looking to only push 200 gph, a small mag may suffice.
    Cheers
