I wouldn't worry too much about him stirring up your sandbed.
My pistol shrimp will wake me up. Very loud sometimes. (mostly when the serpent starfish i moving around and prolly stumbles across where he is)
it sounds like someone is snapping their fingers loudly.

As for food i don't really feed mine, they get the leftovers from everything else.

I added a pistol shrimp and goby pair to my tank about a month ago. I didn't notice any nitrate spikes. I also never hear him.

They're so amazing to watch. My sandbed changes every few days. about a week after I added them to my tank, the pistol shrimp lost a claw? I don't know if my left-handed crab got to close or my clownfish got a little hungry? Anyways, the claw has grown back very quickly! Just facinating!

It's added a lot of character to my tank!

My friend has his 65G mounted on a metal stand. What's really neat is that his pistol shrimp has dug his cavern right down to the glass - you can watch him from underneath!
