    How many return holes?

    Hi All,
I have just ordered my custom made 90 Gal., I have one overflow in the left corner drilled on the back and one return on the right side. Is this enough return or should I order another hole drilled just to the right of the overflow box on the left?

I would think one return is enough, but you may want to think about two overflows. This gives you redundancy (spelling?) so that if one overflow gets blocked, you won't get a flood.

Good point pwall, but with only one return I will still need to have circulation pumps inside to create movement, right?

    Absolutely!
You will need smaller pumps for circulation. You will want to aim for a minimum of 10x flow...so in a 90 gallon tank, at least 900gallons an hour flow minimum.
There are two main ways of doing that....putting in a few maxi-jets in the tank to create flow. Or to go with closed-loops.
Others on this board will be able to explain closed-loop better than I as I don't have them (as I didn't know about them until after setting up my tank).

    Patrick.

Thanks Patrick. Can anyone explain what is meant by "closed-loop"?

you only need one return hole, as pwall was saying
I have fluval 2's and some sweeping powerheads to keep the flow.
they make it easier for cleaning, as all the 'dirt' accumulates underneath of them

A closed loop is simply having an external pump draw water from inside the tank and then dump it back in. Usually there are holes drilled along the back wall of the tank that are returns from the pump. Not a great explanation, but it should give you an idea.

Thanks Kenzy, that sounds like I need more return holes than just the one. Would two suffice? One at either side and then use a SWCR (or watever its called) to simulate waves. Any recommendations to the location of the overflow and return(s).

If I understand closed loops correctly, they are seperate from your return line.
The return line takes the water from your sump and puts in into your display tank. You really only need 1.
The overflow takes just that, the overflow and allows the water to run back down into the sump. You need at least 1, having 2 is an advantage for redundancy reasons.

Closed loops allow extra flow in the tank without having powerheads taking up room and looking ugly. These are seperate from the return/overflow lines.

If I am wrong, please correct me.
