new tank setup
Hello all! I've just started to build a 75 gal. marine tank, and I would like to add LR ..trouble is I don't have a budget to do the whole tank with it. Can I safely use limestone as base rock, and add live rock as well. I've been checking out other posts, but couldn't find one about rocks!
Thank you for any info....[COLOR=coral]

I don't know about lime stone.. but look for somthing called "Lace Rock" it looks just like live rock and i used it as a great base rock.
If you don't have enough live rock to do the system then just start with what you have and just keep your tank lightly stocked and add Cured liverock bit by bit till you get to where you want to be.
Thanks
Mike

[welcome]
Welcome to AC Coral... you could also go with base rock($2/pound) from caribsea. A 50 pound box will run about $90. You could easily ge away with 2/3 base rock seeded with 1/3 live rock.... much lighter on your pocket book... it will eventually turn into live rock(6-8 months). Hope this helps

IJO can also probably find you some Tufa Rock. I have tried both, and prefer the Tufa, since it is much lighter. Just make sure you seed the whole thing with some real good quality live rock, you will be happier with the results. Be patient though, algae really likes to grow on the dead rocks.

Thank you!
Thank you so much for all the great advice. I'll look into the other base rock. This is an awesome forum, and I'm really glad to be a part of it. (I'm located in Southwestern Ontario, about an hour north of Toronto. That's the closest "big city"!)
Thanks again everyone, you're awesome!

We live in a very small rural community about another 45 mins from you... northwest. It's mostly farms out here so I usually use the big TO as a reference point.
