I picked up these bags at a Home Depot in the US.

Those who don't know, Southdown sand is now known as OLD CASTLE.

Same stuff. Same bag. Different company name.

Here's a pic of the bag.

What are your thoughts on this TM? If given the chance... would you stick with it or try something else?

This is information I found on the 'net...

    SKU# 578-819
    UPC code: 0-210026-16865-5
    Model# 420-100

    Other SKU #'s...

    9060420100

    090604201002

I'm not home right now, so I can't check the SKU of the bags I have.
    Hope that helps...

My thoughts on the sand itself... GREAT. Beautiful sand. I'd go with it again.

    However,

I'd change the application in which it's used. With all the DSB debates all over. I'm thinking of using 1" or so in the main tank for "looks", and having a remote DSB / refugium with 6" depth of this stuff.

Also, use it ALL. Don't rinse it out as the different particle sizes are beneficial to other inhabitants.

You may wanna check out my thread on RC on how to avoid the typical "Southdown Milkshake" when adding water to new southdown.

This is the same stuff Barry and I have at home and we found it in the garden/landscaping area, not inside with construction materials. It was something like $4 US so we brought home 6 bags.

Wow 6 bags. Sounds like you might have extra sand.

Maybe...We got some sand from the shore as well but it's more grey than white and not sure how it will look once its wet.

Thanks, I'm going to spend some of the day checking out local shops and seeing what's out there. I'll keep everyone advised if we strike gold.

actually, Gail has already spoken for any extra sand we may have. i'm still thinking about putting a deep sand bed in my 50 gallon sump instead of the main tank. for looks as well as to be safe. still undecided.

I think you'll be SOL trying to get a Canadian HD to get some in. For me, the closest American HD was Syracuse NY, I picked up 600 pounds of it about 3 years ago for myself and a couple of others. Unfortunately this is a seasonal product and may no longer be in stock during the winter. At that time a 50 pound bag was $3.65 USD.
