    VHO bulbs

How often should you replace VHO actinic bulbs?

    Thanks

For average usage 10-12 hrs/day it should be around 6-8 months to replace for new bulbs.
90G bb mixed reef set up in April 2005. I had 40g mixed reef for one year before that

I run mine about a year but they just supplement the metal halides so I'm not as worried about losing par.

Depending on the ballast if using icecap they say you can get almost 18 months out of them.

    Thanks for the help everyone.

Looks like my bulbs needed to be replaced awhile ago. I just use the VHO for actinics to suppliment the metal halides. Not too impressed with the life of these VHO bulbs so I think I am going to replaced my VHO setup with T-5.

    Thanks
    Andrew

I feel the same way, I wish I would have found this site before I dropped the $500 for the 4 bulb VHO Ballast and went with the MH sold thru here...lessoned learned but I will move those over to the new 55g FOWLR setup in the next few weeks. The bulbs run me about $600 every year

How often are you replacing those bulbs? I don't spend that much replacing my halides in a year?

Bulbs are replaced every 6 months, get them at Big Al's here in Mississauga and run 70 -80 a pop

I went with this option before I came to the online sites they want over $2000 for MH so I opted for the next best thing 3 yrs ago.

I find that equipment is starting to get cheaper now...or is it just me.

Do you know where I can get the bulbs cheaper?

Am thinking about order the dual 400w MH complete hood from here and moving the VHO over to the new 55g setup

Andrew if you are looking for some T5's some that I've heard good comments on are the Helios from www.reefsolution.com
They come with it's own ballast, reflectors and bulb for 44.00 (for the attinics) and under 40.00 for the 10k.... I have my order in today actually but I've seen some pics compared to PC's with half the watage and they are brighter.. For the price I'm sold... Just an FYI...
