    HQI ballast SE bulb

I just noticed my ballast is labled 250 HQI, but I'm running a 250SE bulb. Will this reduce bulblife?

I believe that doing so will overdrive the bulbs and make them burn hotter and brighter thus reducing bulb life.

Well Ice cap ballasts are good for HQI and moguel. And they run the bulb a little lower and supposedly give you a longer bulb life. So i think it depends on the ballast type.

I think it depends on the SE lamp you have. AB and USHIO are to be ran on HQI ballasts as far as I know and DE as well.

The bulb is made by venture, and the ballast is PFO.

those ventures are made to run on a standard tar ballast. it will work on your HQI but chances are it will run it in over drive a bit. some people do this on purpose. just use the venture until its time to change and then use a lamp made for HQI.
why did you buy that ballast? were you intending to run DE lamps? the 250de setups sound pretty sweet from what I've heard.

I bought it as a horizontal pendant combo unit from J&L and still being pretty green at the time just plugged it in and never checked anything. The 14K bulb I asked and paid for turned out to be 10K.

The bulb is ten months old now How can I tell when its life is up? the colour still appears bluish. Could I just put a HQI socket in my hood?

    Cool

hqi socket? do you mean DE lamp setup? If so, thats a whole different setup and you'll need pendants with UV shielding.
[DE PENDANTS] for what its worth those VENTURE 10K actually are really close to 13k and are suppose to be really nice.I really don't think you'll have much of an issue running most SE lamps on that ballast. you could try the AB or USHIO lamps in the future or spend the coin and go DE pendants.

Thanks I'll stick with this setup. I am actually really happy with how bright the tank is.
